Our History

John T. Balfe graduated from the University of Notre Dame in 1920 with a B.S. in International Commerce. He earned a Master’s Degree in Irish History at the University of Buenos Aires in 1922 and returned to New York to commence his career in the Insurance Industry.

The John T. Balfe Company sold Life Insurance and Pensions from the Lincoln Building at 60 East 42nd Street , and ended up at 200 East 42nd Street. John Balfe earned his CLU designation in the 1930’s and he ran his office until 1984.

His daughter Eileen Balfe graduated from St. Mary’s College in 1949. She worked in her father’s office until obtaining a position in the Executive Offices of the A&P Corporation in the Graybar Building above Grand Central Station. Eileen was also taking Evening MBA classes at NYU until her marriage to Francis J. Harrigan in 1956.

Francis J. Harrigan served in the 200th Infantry ‘Dixie’ Division during the Korean War and earned the rank of Sergeant Major. Upon discharge he attended Iona College and graduated in 1955 with a BA in Accounting. After a stint at Haskins & Sells [a predecessor of Deloitte Touche] and a memorable New Year’s Eve counting Government Bonds in the vault at the Irving Trust Company, he decided that the insurance business was for him.

He was trained at the Aetna Life & Casualty offices in Hartford, Connecticut and worked for several years at his father in law’s office before going out on his own.

Francis J Harrigan Insurance opened on March 1, 1960 on Addison Street in Larchmont. While Life Insurance was his forte, Frank Harrigan branched out to Property and Casualty and was known for providing excellent personal service to his clients.

The office moved to Frank’s home on Central Avenue in Rye, NY in 1984 and was combined with the John T Balfe Company. Eileen Balfe Harrigan oversaw the sale of the Commercial Lines Business of her father’s firm and handled the merger of the life and personal lines for the two firms.

Francis J Harrigan Jr graduated from the University of Notre Dame in 1980 with a BBA in Accounting and earned a JD at night from Fordham Law School in 1986. Along the way, he worked as a Tax and Financial Analyst at Crane Co in midtown Manhattan, a Legal Assistant at Prudential Bache Securities, a Sales/Trader/Analyst for Dominick & Dominick, and as NYS Counsel for Lawyers Title Insurance.

He joined his father at Francis J Harrigan Insurance in late 1992 and the office was moved to 246 Purchase Street in Rye on March 1, 1996.

The office moved to New Canaan, Connecticut in April, 2010.
